Lecture: The Flesh Made Word
At Ultrafett Festival, Bielefeld

This talk charts the relationship between the alphabet and the female body: I consider the various ways that type design has been significant to feminist projects, whether in revealing language targeted at women’s bodies - “grab them by the pussy” - or by probing at language’s binaries. From cheerleaders to Anthon Beeke to Paul Elliman to Martha Rosler, I explore the ways that conceptual alphabets have concealed and revealed the typographic interplay of words designing and giving shape to types of bodies.
